Apple Bows Down to Chinese Censors Again, Yanks Tons of App Store Gambling Content

Casino News Daily
Apple Bows Down to Chinese Censors Again, Yanks Tons of App Store Gambling Content

Apple has reportedly pulled thousands of gambling apps from its Chinese App Store after facing media backlash for failing to prevent Chinese customers from being exposed to banned content.

State-controlled media outlet China Central Television reported over the weekend that the US tech giant, which recently became the world’s first trillion-dollar company, wiped at least 4,000 apps tagged with the keyword “gambling” on August 9 alone. Another 500 apps tagged with the keyword “lottery” are, too, believed to have been removed from the China-facing App Store.

In a statement from earlier today, Apple said that it has already removed “many apps and developers” that were trying to distribute illegal gambling content and that they are “vigilant” in their efforts to detect any such apps and stop their distribution across the App Store. The company refused to reveal how many apps it has pulled, but said that its move was part of its effort to show full compliance with Chinese regulations.

China is Apple’s largest market, second only to the United States. The Asian country is also the company’s main iPhone and iPad production base. This is not the first time the company has been trying to appease Chinese media and state regulators. Back in 2013, the tech giant had to apologize after facing heavy criticism from the China Central Television broadcaster for poor customer service standards. In 2017, Apple was compelled to remove hundreds of VPN apps after it found itself in the middle of massive media backlash for trying to circumvent Internet censorship rules.

China Not Impressed with Apple’s Efforts

China has a long history of censorship and as it can be seen Apple has been a favorite target for several years now. In its comments on the tech giant’s recent gambling and lottery apps purge, the state-run China Central Television did not seem very impressed with what has been achieved so far.

The broadcaster said that the company pulling multiple apps was not sufficient because the apps have already become available to a number of iPhone and iPad users as they have been downloaded and can still be used and even updated.

Apple said in its statement from earlier today that it has launched a review into the rules under which apps tagged as ones providing gambling and lottery offering should be distributed in different countries and economies.

News about Apple’s Chinese App Store cleanup arrive shortly after it was reported that the tech giant has wiped a number of gambling-focused apps following the implementation of a new App Review policy. However, it emerged that the purge affected developers who had uploaded apps that had had nothing to do with gambling.

A few weeks ago, the company was forced to remove a number of gambling apps from its Norwegian App Store, following pressure from local gambling regulators. The state-run Norsk Tipping and Norsk Rikstoto are currently the only two operators authorized to provide gambling services in the Scandinavian country.

Peter Hengsakul Leads after WPT500 Los Angeles Days 1A and 1B

Peter Hengsakul Leads after WPT500 Los Angeles Days 1A and 1B

The WPT500 Los Angeles kicked off Saturday at the host venue, The Bicycle Casino, with two starting flights. As many as 331 entries registered into the $570 buy-in tournament during Days 1A and 1B, but only 17 of them will progress into Day 2.

The event features a total of fourteen starting flights, running all the way through August 25, so there is still a plethora of opportunities for interested players to enter it for a chance at the title and the lion’s share of the prize pool. But without much further ado, here is how action unfolded during the two starting flights.

Day 1A action kicked off at 11:30 am local time at the host casino. As many as 251 players entered through that first starting flight, but there were just 13 of them left at the tables of The Bicycle when organizers called it a day. Play was stopped with 24:51 remaining in Level 21.

Peter Hengsakul bagged the largest chip stack at the end of Day 1A. The player put a total of 1.151 million in his bag. Hengsakul has a massive chip lead over his fellow Day 1A survivors, with Robert Zeidman standing nearest to him in the leaderboard with 620,000. It is interesting to note that Hengsakul finished third in the previous edition of the WPT500 Los Angeles, which took place in May 2017. The player collected $100,000 for his deep run in that event.

Day 1B Action

The Day 1B (Turbo) starting flight kicked off at 5 pm at the host venue. It attracted 80 entrants, but only four of them survived to the very end of the ordeal. Peter Neff ended play as the chip leader with 714,000. This means that Hengsakul is the overnight chip leader of the first two starting flights of the tournament and will be heading the remaining 17 players into Day 2 next Sunday.

Day 1B concluded with 18:09 remaining in Level 22, blinds standing at 8,000-16,000. After all starting flights are completed and Day 2 begins, the blinds are set to be rocked back to the earliest finish of all fourteen Day 1s.

WPT500 action is set to resume at 11:30 am today at The Bicycle for Day 1C. Day 1D is scheduled to begin at 5 pm local time. Unlimited re-entries into the tournament are allowed until registration closes before the start of Level 9. Day 2 of the tournament will take place on Sunday, August 26. The remaining survivors will play down to the final 9 who will return on Monday to determine the winner.

The previous edition of the WPT500 Los Angeles was hosted by The Gardens Casino in the spring of 2017. The tournament was entered by 3,266 participants, who generated a prize pool of over $1.6 million. The top 263 finishers received a share of the money, min-cashes starting from $1,300. Poker pro Dong Le took down the event to collect a first-place prize of $224,500.

Vittorio Faricelli Wins Opening Event at WSOP Circuit Foxwoods

Vittorio Faricelli Wins Opening Event at WSOP Circuit Foxwoods

The second stop on the 2018/2019 WSOP Circuit schedule is now in full swing, with Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Connecticut currently playing host to the popular series. And a first gold ring has already been awarded to its rightful winner as part of the ongoing poker festival.

Vittorio Faricelli, a real estate broker from Brooklyn, New York, won last night his first piece of WSOP Circuit paraphernalia after a near-miss in Atlantic City earlier this year. The player took down the opening $400 No-Limit Hold’em at Foxwoods after two days of poker action.

The tournament drew a field of 113 entries who created a prize pool of $37,290. The top 12 finishers were treated to a share of the prize pool, with min-cashes starting from $779. Each of the nine final tablists was guaranteed a minimum payout of $963. As for the winner, he collected $11,187 to accompany his gold ring.

This was Faricelli’s fifth cash from the WSOP Circuit and seventh from a WSOP-branded event. Earlier this summer, the player finished in the money in the $1,111 Little One for ONE DROP for $1,593 and The Closer $1,500 No-Limit Hold’em for $4,021.

As mentioned above, the latest WSOP Circuit gold ring winner nearly claimed the piece earlier this year. Faricelli reached heads-up against Joshua Clanton in a $365 No-Limit Hold’em event at Harrah’s Atlantic City, but eventually placed second.

Event Highlights

The opening $400 No-Limit Hold’em at Foxwoods turned out to be Faricelli’s lucky one. The tournament was played over two days. The second day of action saw just three players return to battle it out for the first-place prize and the gold ring.

The eventual champion was holding the chip lead with 774,000 at the time cards were thrown in the air for Day 2 action. Lowell Kim held the second largest stack with 641,000, and James Campbell was the short stack with just under 300,000.

The event’s second day was a relatively short one. Campbell busted in third place for $4,922 and left it to Faricelli and Kim to square off for the gold ring. Faricelli was leading at the beginning of heads-up, but Kim managed to double up early into the match. However, the eventual champion rapidly gained pace to extend his advantage significantly until the final hand was dealt.

The two players got it all in with Faricelli tabling [Ac][6c] to Kim’s [10d][9d]. Faricelli’s ace-high kept him comfortable all the way through the river when he scored a straight for extra advantage. Kim was thus eliminated in second place for a payout of $6,914.

Commenting on his triumph last night, Faricelli said that his general positive attitude has helped him a lot in difficult situations on and off the poker felt. The player said that lately he has been running great not just in poker but in life as a whole. Faricelli recently wed his partner Pamela and is having his best life as a newlywed.

Mystery Prize Gaming Machines Now Deemed Illegal Gambling in Singapore

Casino News Daily
Mystery Prize Gaming Machines Now Deemed Illegal Gambling in Singapore

Mystery prize vending machines are now illegal in Singapore, according to an announcement made by local police cited by news outlet the Straits Times. A ban on the machines is being rolled out as their number has grown tremendously over the past year and at least four operators of such devices have been found to have set up business in shopping malls, retail stores, and arcades across the city-state.

Generally speaking, the machines in question dispense random non-monetary prizes upon receiving a cash payment by players. They usually charge between S$5 and S$10. The “mystery box” prizes they dispense are usually of low value, but operators of the machines often promote them as ones that offer customers the chance to win big prize such as gaming consoles and smartphones.

According to a Thursday statement by the local police, the devices represented a form of public lottery and were therefore breaching provisions of the Common Gaming Houses Act. The statement further read that operators of such vending machines were advised to cease their operations. Under Singapore’s gambling laws, violators of its provisions face prison time of up to five years and fines of between S$20,000 and S$200,000.

The machines originally gained popularity in Japan, Malaysia, and Taiwan, but have quickly taken off across Singapore over the past year, the Straits Times reports.

Claw Machines Not Gambling

Police clarified that unlike “mystery box” machines, those at arcades that allow customers to grab a prize with a claw in exchange for a certain fee, are not considered illegal gambling. The reason was that players can easily see the prizes they are paying and playing for.

When asked whether other forms of mystery boxes, including ones offered on e-commerce platforms, should be deemed gambling, authorities said that it is up to the public to seek legal advice on matters of this nature.

Commenting on whether mystery prize vending machines posed a threat to players, addiction specialist Thomas Lee told the Straits Times that he did not think the risks of addiction were that big. He went on to say that the only real danger is that children can get hooked up and spend money on them.

According to the expert, the idea behind gambling is that people wager on a random outcome, on something they do not have control over, and that it does not really matter whether there is something at the end or not, as it is still gambling.

The Straits Times further reports that mystery prize vending machines across a number of shopping malls, arcades, and stores have been removed overnight, following the Thursday statement from the police. However, there were still several facilities that featured the devices, with their owners claiming they did not know that those were now illegal.

Jeju Shinhwa World Casino Thrives Despite Chinese Boycott

Casino News Daily
Jeju Shinhwa World Casino Thrives Despite Chinese Boycott

The Jeju Shinhwa World integrated resort located on South Korea’s Jeju Island has raked in KRW369.4 billion (approximately $327.7 million) in revenue since its grand opening in February, local news outlets report. The property features one of the island’s nine casinos as well as a number of non-gambling options.

The reported figure places Jeju Shinhwa World well ahead of its local rivals. According to official data, Jeju Island’s other eight casinos generated the total amount of KRW136.5 billion during the same reviewed period. In addition, the Jeju Shinhwa World resort took in around five times more than South Korea’s biggest casino, Paradise City located in Incheon.

The Jeju Island-based resort was developed and is operated by Hong Kong-based real estate developer Landing International Development. The company commenced construction on what turned out to be a KRW2-trillion mega-scheme in 2014 and began opening the property in phases from April 2017. Aside from a gaming floor, the resort also features a hotel, a convention center, retail space, theme and water parks, a concert hall, and multiple food and beverage facilities.

Jeju Shinhwa World welcomed some 350,000 international visitors since it launched and around 115,000 played at its casinos, the resort has revealed.

Jeju Shinhwa World Shines amid Rivals’ Struggles

The Jeju Island has long been a popular hub for Chinese tourists. However, the island was among the places around South Korea to be hit the hardest last year by the economic cost of China’s unofficial but wide-ranging boycott of South Korean goods.

Among other things, Beijing banned group tours to Korea which saw the number of Mainland China visits to Jeju fall steeply. As a result, the island’s casinos, which relied heavily on Chinese VIP customers, experienced sharp declines in their gaming revenues.

Jeju Shinhwa World, on the other hand, appeared to have adopted a different model that eventually helped it mitigate the consequences of China’s ire. Instead of relying solely on Chinese customers, the resort stepped up its efforts to attract visitors from other countries in the Asia-Pacific region.

Serena Eng, Vice President of Marketing at the casino, said that they assembled teams that had to draw and cater to VIP guests from Japan, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan and hired more staff that spoke Cantonese and Taiwanese Mandarin instead of relying solely on Beijing-style Mandarin-speaking staff members. That helped Jeju Shinhwa World reduce the proportion of its guests from China to just 50%, compared to up to 90% at other resorts across the Asia-Pacific region.

In addition, the resort’s casino paid special attention to VIP marketing as it derived 80% of its revenue namely from high roller players. The gaming floor at Jeju Shinhwa World currently features 165 gaming tables and half of these are dedicated to VIP players. In comparison, other resorts across the Jeju Island use just about 15% of their tables for high roller gaming action.

MGM Springfield Denied Request for Animated Parking Garage Sign

Casino News Daily
MGM Springfield Denied Request for Animated Parking Garage Sign

MGM Springfield’s request for an animated parking garage sign was denied by the Massachusetts Gaming Commission during a Tuesday meeting. Gaming commissioners voted 5-0 against the use of animations citing public safety and distracted driving concerns, local news outlet MassLive reported.

The parking garage sign will instead have rotating static images that will change every eight seconds. Gaming Commission spokeswoman Elaine Driscoll said that commissioners agreed to reconsider the issue after three months.

The announcement comes less than ten days before MGM Springfield’s grand opening on August 24. The property, developed and operated by Las Vegas gaming and hospitality giant MGM Resorts International, will be Massachusetts’ first commercial resort with a casino floor.

MGM Springfield lodged its request for an animated sign back in March. The casino told state gaming regulators at the time that its third-party consultant, Watertown-based VHB, had assured it after evaluating multiple studies that there had not been a “statistically significant correlation” between “outdoor electronic signs and driver safety”.

It was last week when the casino resort had its sign installed and lit up on the seven-story parking garage, just below its marquee. It now features a message that reads “We’re ready to roar” referring to the upcoming opening of the property and to MGM’s signature Leo the Lion mascot. MGM Springfield had its version of the emblematic lion put up last week.

The hotel and casino resort occupies several blocks in the downtown-South End area of the city of Springfield. MGM invested $960 million in what would be Massachusetts’ first commercial casino. Aside from a gaming floor with table games and slot machines, the property will also feature a six-story hotel, multiple food and beverage and entertainment facilities, and a parking garage, which MGM announced recently will be free for visitors and guests of the resort.

No Smoking

MGM Springfield officials confirmed earlier this week that smoking will not be allowed on the casino floor. The property will thus become one of nearly 800 casinos across the nation that are smoke-free.

Under the Massachusetts’ gambling regulations, all gaming venues operating on the territory of the state must be smoke-free. The Plainridge Park Casino gaming hall, which opened doors in Plainville in the summer of 2015, does not allow smoking on its gaming floor under the same requirements. The Encore Boston Harbor integrated resort currently under development in the Greater Boston area will, too, prohibit smoking at its casino.

MGM said that its Springfield resort will feature outdoor areas that will be designated for smoking. The operator pointed out that while regional competition, driving distance, weather conditions, and socioeconomic factors might impact the performance of a casino quite negatively, smoking status was not a factor that they are concerned by.

Adam Ross Wins First WSOP Circuit Season 2018/2019 Main Event at Harrah’s Cherokee

Casino News Daily
Adam Ross Wins First WSOP Circuit Season 2018/2019 Main Event at Harrah’s Cherokee

Adam Ross became the first WSOP Circuit Main Event champion of the popular poker series’ new season. The player topped a behemoth field at Harrah’s Cherokee in North Carolina for his biggest career score of $295,970, his first WSOP Circuit gold ring, and a seat into next year’s WSOP Global Casino Championship.

Ross was more than ecstatic to win the major tournament. He was jumping and shouting at the top of his lungs, celebrating the fact that he has finally scooped a life-changing amount of money that would help him pay his mortgage.

Ross has been playing poker as a recreational player for quite some time. He has collected multiple cashes from different tournaments, but has never before won what he considers a life-changing monetary prize. Fresh off his victory, he said that he will continue playing poker occasionally and that he plans to take part in next year’s WSOP Main Event, aside from the WSOP Global Casino Championship.

The WSOP Circuit Harrah’s Cherokee Main Event took place over four days at the host venue. The $1,700 buy-in tournament featured two starting flights and two more days of play. Each of the starting flights allowed players to re-enter once. The event eventually attracted 1,056 entrants who generated a prize pool of $1,599,840. The top 108 places paid, min-cashes starting from $2,944.

Ross’ Performance

Ross did not have a smooth start of the tournament but improved significantly during Day 2 to eventually bag and tag the sixth largest stack of all 21 players who remained in contention at the end of play on that day.

He maintained his momentum throughout Day 3 to battle and hold up against much more accomplished players, including WSOP gold bracelet holder Jesse Rockowitz, six-time WSOP Circuit gold ring winner Dan Lowery, and former gold ring winners Eyal Bensimhon, Andrew Kelsall, and Charles Johnson.

Ross finally faced Ryan Phan, a one-time gold ring winner, heads-up. The two-handed match began with Phan holding the chip lead with 16 million to Ross’ 15 million. The match was packed with action as the chip lead exchanged hands a number of times, until Ross assumed control over the majority of chips in play one final time and never looked back, methodically weakening his opponent’s defense.

On what turned out to be the last hand of the final table and the tournament, Phan had only a couple of big blinds left, which he moved all in pre-flop. Ross called with [2c][2d] to Phan’s [Kc][10d]. A [Ac][4d][6c][2h][5h] board sealed it for Ross, while Phan hit the rail in second place, good for $182,990.

Harrah’s Cherokee was the first stop of the new WSOP Circuit season. The series has a total of 28 festivals booked throughout its 2018/2019 season and Foxwoods Resort Casino in Connecticut will play host to the next one from August 16-27.

Why Has Sweden’s Gambling Market Re-Regulation Created Such a Big Buzz?

Casino News Daily
Why Has Sweden’s Gambling Market Re-Regulation Created Such a Big Buzz?

The recent participation of Casino News Daily team members in several iGaming conferences has, among other things, confirmed what we all expected – Sweden and the re-regulation of its gambling market has indeed created quite some buzz in the field.

Lotteriinspektionen, the Swedish Gambling Authority, launched the application process for gambling companies interested in operating in the country under its new gambling law on August 1. According to various sources, the regulatory body accepted 22 license applications on the very first day. Around 27 companies are believed to have applied for a license so far, and Swedish authorities expect around 70 applications ahead of the January1, 2019 opening of the market.

Sweden’s state-run Svenska Spel as well as major gambling companies originating from the country but operating from Malta, including Betsson, LeoVegas, and Kindred Group, were among the early birds of the ongoing application process. And while a number of companies are looking to join the Scandinavian nation’s gambling space as early as possible, others have told members of our editorial team that they would approach the newly regulated market a bit more cautiously and wait until after the actual re-regulation takes place.

It is believed that Sweden could rapidly turn into one of Europe’s largest regulated jurisdictions in terms of revenue generated once its new regulatory regime takes effect. According to official data by Lotteriinspektionen, the regulated portion of Sweden’s gambling market, which is controlled by state-run operators, generated revenue of SEK17.07 billion ($1.8 billion) in 2017, while unregulated operators servicing local players generated SEK5.534 billion ($607.97 million).

Here it is important to note that the size of the country’s gray market cannot be estimated accurately and that it is probably much larger than what has been stated in Lotteriinspektionen’s latest annual report. Nevertheless, the figures reported certainly create optimistic visions of the future of Sweden’s re-regulated gambling market. And it is a matter of a very short time until the industry sees whether these visions will become reality.

Potential of the Swedish Gambling Market

Online gambling has been a popular activity across the Scandinavian Peninsula, Sweden included, since its not-so-distant dawn. The widespread tech-savviness of the Swedish population and the high Internet and mobile penetration rates have helped the online gambling industry as well as other digital developments keep and grow their footprint in the country.

In other words, Sweden has always been in a pole position when adopting and assimilating digital infrastructure, and this is why it is believed that the re-regulation of its gambling market and its opening to international operators that will bring further innovation, but in a regulated environment, is a step in the right direction, and a step that would provide for a further growth of the market.

The way a market is regulated defines the way it will develop in future. It can be said that, with very few exceptions, the provisions comprising Sweden’s new gambling law seem to be quite reasonable ones, not that likely to prevent the re-regulation’s success. For instance, Swedish lawmakers have introduced an 18% tax rate on gross gambling revenue, which given the anticipated size of the market and the wagering volumes operators expect from Sweden, could be described as a reasonable rate. It is a bit higher than UK’s 15% point-of-consumption tax, but it is lower than Denmark’s 20% tax.

eSports Betting – an Anticipated Success Story

With gambling companies looking for ways to attract younger generations of customers to their products, eSports and eSports betting are gradually becoming a popular option for drawing clientèle.

According to multiple online gambling companies, eSports could be one of the big success stories of the upcoming re-regulation of Sweden’s online gambling market. The world of eSports seems to be booming right now and a recent report by Paypal and Superdata shows that Sweden is Europe’s second biggest eSports market, only topped by Russia.

The publication notes that the Swedish eSports market is worth $31 million based on tickets and other products sales as well as sponsorships and brand popularization activities. In comparison, Russia’s eSports market is estimated to around $38 million.

A separate report by Kindred Group claims that Sweden has more professional eSport players than any other country. In addition, the country was allocated a particularly large portion of overall eSports winnings in 2016. And Paypal and Superdata believe that the Swedish eSports market will continue growing beyond 2019 when the European market is expected to reach its peak in terms of audience and players.

Data from the above reports presents a really nice picture for the potential creation of a solid eSports betting sector in Sweden under the country’s new regulatory regime. And multiple operators have actually confirmed that they would venture into the nation’s re-regulated market with an eSports betting product, in addition to their more traditional offering.

Possible Hurdles Before Gambling Companies

Competition in Sweden’s gambling market is expected to be fierce. A number of companies will be competing for a bigger share of a newly regulated market in a country with a total population of 9.9 million people. And some of these companies have already gained advantage over their future competitors through aggressive advertising activities in the country.

A report by measurement firm Kantar Sifo has shown that the national monopoly Svenska Spel as well as international gambling companies Kindred Group and LeoVegas placed among the nation’s top 20 advertisers in 2017 with total ad spending of SEK472.3 million, SEK443.09 million, and SEK313.1 million, respectively.

These companies as well as a number of major others operating in Sweden for years have already gained brand awareness and customer bases that will challenge newcomers quite significantly.

Another important thing to be taken into account as part of Sweden’s iGaming regulatory push is one particular provision in the country’s new gambling law, under which licensed operators would not be able to offer bonuses to their players beyond “the first occasion in which [a] player participates in a game”. As a result, black market operators will be able to gain a competitive edge with countless bonus offers, which would certainly create inconvenience for licensed companies.

Final Comments

Sweden is months away from re-regulating its market and opening it to international operators. The process is expected to create one of Europe’s largest and highest grossing jurisdictions, but despite the expectations and the fact that the regulatory environment created will be, to some extent, operator-friendly, there still will be major hurdles before the newly licensed companies and that it will take time before the market truly shows its actual potential.

WSOP Circuit Kicks Off New Season with 1,056-Person Harrah’s Cherokee Main Event

It was just a few days ago when the 2017/2018 season of the WSOP Circuit ended with Warren Sheaves claiming the WSOP Global Casino Championship title and the accompanying gold bracelet. It is now time for the popular poker series’ new season and not only its first stop has kicked off in style at Harrah’s Cherokee in North Carolina, but it is actually approaching its end.

The Main Event of the first stop on the WSOP Circuit’s 2018/2019 calendar kicked off Friday at the host venue with the first of two starting flights. And Day 1B, the second starting flight, was completed last night with Louis Garza holding the chip lead with a total of 476,000, followed by Austria’s Eyal Bensimhon (pictured) with 393,000.

It was actually Bensimhon who made the biggest waves throughout the tournament’s second starting flight. The player won some massive pots early on Saturday to never lose his momentum until action wrapped up for the day. Other notables who made it through the day included Bryan Devonshir, JJ Liu, Dan Lowery, and Ryan Buckholtz, among others.

The second starting flight of the Main Event actually drew 647 entrants, of whom just 139 players secured their seats into Day 2. They will be joined by the survivors from Day 1A for ten one-hour levels at the host venue.

Day 1 Recap and Prize Pool

The first Main Event of the new WSOP Circuit season drew a field of 1,056 entries, of whom 409 joined on Day 1A and 647 entered on Day 1B. As many as 219 made it through Day 2 and will return at the host venue later today to compete for a spot among the Day 3 hopefuls.

Day 2 of the tournament will kick off with Day 1A chip leader Jeffrey Trudeau holding the overall chip lead. The player bagged and tagged 495,000 in chips at the end of the Main Event’s first starting flight to pull ahead of the rest of the field.

The WSOP Circuit’s new season came with slightly increased buy-ins, so it now costs $1,700 to enter the Main Event, up from $1,675. With registration now closed, organizers announced that the first Main Event of the new season generated a prize pool of $1,599,840, crashing the guaranteed prize pool of $1 million.

The top 108 finishers will receive a share of the money, min-cashes starting from $2,994. The money bubble is expected to burst at some point today. Each of the nine finalists at the tournament’s official final table will receive a minimum cash of $29,181. As for the winner, they will be awarded the top prize of $295,970 and the WSOP Circuit gold ring.

Harry Arutyunyan from Glendale, California took down last year’s edition of the tournament, beating a field of 1,022 entries and taking home the amount of $283,597 in prize money.

Greece Launches International Tender for €8 Billion Casino Project after Sept. 10

Casino News Daily
Greece Launches International Tender for €8 Billion Casino Project after Sept. 10

After a huge delay on the ambitious €8 billion Hellinikon casino project, Greece will finally launch the international tender for a license this fall. The Hellenic Gaming Commission has now invited all interested parties to submit proposals regarding the plans for Europe’s first integrated casino resort.

Back in February, the Greek Council of State gave a final approval for the construction of a major casino and entertainment resort at the former site of the Ellinikon International Airport (also spelled Hellenikon). Slated to become the nation’s biggest coastal resort and first integrated casino resort in Europe, the €8 billion project is also a key term in the country’s international bailout. This caused unrelenting pressure for launching the development as soon as possible.

The project has faced several delays over the past few years, sparking heated disputes between its proponents and environmentalists and archaeologists. Greek authorities are now aiming at finding a casino operator by the end of the year so that construction work can finally start in early 2019. The Hellenic Gaming Commission, which is the local gambling regulator, is now inviting all stakeholders to submit comments and make proposals. This public consultation about the investment project will run through September 10.

According to the regulator, the international tender for a casino license will be opened for bidding soon after that. The concessionaire who wins the tender will operate the casino for a period of 30 years. It will be part of a much larger project expected to create up to 10,000 construction jobs during development, as well as more than 70,000 direct and indirect (from the increased economic activity) jobs during the first five years of operation.

The Largest Tourism & Gaming Destination in Greece

In an official announcement, the Hellenic Gaming Commission said that the future casino would be an essential part of the coastal resort, which will transform the economy and the lives of millions of people in the wider Athens area. When it opens its doors, the resort will be key to the future development of the tourism sector in Greece and is expected to revitalize the slowly recovering economy and reduce unemployment.

It will cover a wide, 600-hectare area and will have hotels and residential buildings, convention facilities, entertainment and concert venue, themed parks, luxury retail and fine dining outlets, as well as a casino. Likely to occupy one of the 45-story Hellenikon skyscrapers, the casino will spread across an area of 15,000 square meters, with the gaming floor planned to cover around 8,000 sq.m. The remaining area of the property is intended for non-gaming facilities.

So far, the only gaming operator to express some interest in the future casino on the Athenian Riviera is the US-based corporation Caesars Entertainment. The Las Vegas casino giant has eyed the Hellenikon casino as part of its expansion plans but still has not disclosed any details regarding its potential participation in the tender.

Man Who Cracked Roulette and Won Millions Dies at 86

Man Who Cracked Roulette and Won Millions Dies at 86

Medical researcher Richard Jarecki who cracked roulette in the 1970s, winning millions of dollars in European casinos, died on July 25 at the age of 86. Taking advantage of flawed roulette wheels, he became legendary among gamblers and a threat to some of the most popular casino facilities in Monte Carlo, Italy, and Las Vegas.

The news of Jarecki’s passing was reported on Thursday and multiple stories of his successful runs across gaming facilities in the 1960s and 1970s began to resurface. According to the New York Times, the German-born university professor died on July 25 in his home in Manila from pneumonia. Richard Jarecki was born in Germany but he grew up in the United States where his family was forced to emigrate by the Nazi party in the 1930s. He studied at Duke University and then, at the University of Heidelberg in Germany. According to reports from the 1960s, this is where he started winning huge amounts of money on roulette.

During the early 1960s, Dr. Jarecki and his wife visited dozens of casinos across Europe and in the United States. He was well-known in Monte Carlo, as well as in the casinos in Divonne-les-Bains, France, Las Vegas and Baden-Baden, Germany. He was also a regular player at the Italian Riviera casino in San Remo, which generated serious losses during his playing sessions. His success on the roulette table encouraged other gamblers to place the same bets and as a result, casinos generated even larger losses.

It is believed that Jarecki was banned from several casinos and according to his wife’s account, Italian authorities managed to bar him from entering the country for several months. The Morning Herald cites San Remo casino’s managing director Robert Lardera who said that by 1969, Jarecki was considered “a menace to every casino in Europe”. His casino winnings were believed to exceed $1.2 million or more than $8 million in today’s money, which is an exceptional amount of money since roulette is a random game. Winning and losing should be a matter of pure chance.

How Did He Crack the Roulette?

While he was studying in his home country, Richard W. Jarecki realized that there had to be a way to successfully predict where the ball would land on the roulette wheel. According to news reports from the 1960s and 1970s, he explained that he managed to do that and win by developing a statistical model on a computer in the University of London. This was the official version meant for casino owners and employees, however, while the truth was very different.

It turns out that Jarecki was actually carefully observing roulette wheels for slight imperfections and collected large amounts of data on each roulette table before he started playing. After analyzing the entire information gathered by himself and his friends, he successfully exploited these flaws in the construction of the wheels and the tables, eventually turning the edge in his favor. These imperfections included manufacturing defects, scratches, wear and tear, unleveled gaming tables, and more.

While he successfully used this method to win at roulette, he did not invent it. In reality, this strategy was created much earlier, in the 19th century by English engineer Joseph Jagger. Known as “the man who broke the bank in Monte Carlo”, Jagger is the first person known to have used this system. Others have also exploited the mechanical flaws of roulette wheels, however. It was exactly what Richard Jarecki took advantage of – any mechanical flaws and wear and tear that result in a bias toward certain numbers. After observing the ball for a long time, he could predict with a high degree of certainty where the ball would fall next.
