Mohammed Nuwwarah Takes Down WSOP Circuit Horseshoe Hammond $600 H.O.R.S.E.

Casino News Daily
Mohammed Nuwwarah Takes Down WSOP Circuit Horseshoe Hammond $600 H.O.R.S.E.

Nuwwarah captures debut WSOP Circuit title on his 32nd birthday

Mohammed Nuwwarah, an Omaha, Nebraska resident with solid poker background, won last night the $600 buy-in H.O.R.S.E. that played as part of the ongoing WSOP Circuit Horseshoe Hammond series. The player captured a gold ring and a cash prize of $14,008 after besting 95 like-minded fans of mixed game formats.

Nuwwarah is a member of a poker media by trade, but playing the game is also something he enjoys and apparently is good at. He told WSOP staff after his triumph last night that he likes all Stud games and that he is not a big Omaha 8 or Better fan. Ironically, he won his first piece of WSOP Circuit gold namely while playing an Omaha 8 or Better hand, so he dislikes the game a little less now.

As mentioned, the tournament, marked as Event #7 on the Horseshoe Hammond schedule, featured a 95-strong field that generated a prize pool of $43,775. Apart from the eventual winner, nine more players left with a payout from the H.O.R.S.E. event.

The tournament was played over two days. The second and final day kicked off with 23 lucky hopefuls advancing from Day 1. Cory Chaput led the pack of survivors into the second day of action. He was followed by none other but the eventual champion. Chaput had a total of 181,500 in chips at the start of Day 2, while Nuwwarah held 135,000.

Final Table Highlights

By the time there were just nine players left in contention, Nuwwarah had already swelled his stack and emerged as the chip leader. Nine-handed action kicked off with the eventual champ holding 465,000 in chips, nearly two times more than his nearest competitor – Christopher Grzadziel.

Final table play unfolded relatively quickly until there were just two players left. Michael Hanson was the hopeful whom Nuwwarah faced heads-up. Hanson, too, was vying for his first ring from the series.

What came next was an action-packed three-hour duel that saw Nuwwarah drop to just nine big blinds at some point and then recover to claim the title. Chips swung back and forth for a while and none of the remaining players was happy to give up on the title without a good fight. Eventually, an Omaha 8 or Better hand brought the tournament to a long-anticipated end. Hanson departed with a payout of $8,657 for his runner-up finish.

It is interesting to note that Nuwwarah was a birthday boy yesterday. He said at the beginning of heads-up that he hoped play would extended until after midnight “to outlast the birthday run good.” However, the player emerged as the tournament’s victor five minutes before midnight. Nuwwarah told WSOP staff that he would give his piece of WSOP jewelry to his mother.

Final Flight of WSOP Circuit Horseshoe Hammond Draws Over 1,000 Entrants

Casino News Daily
Final Flight of WSOP Circuit Horseshoe Hammond Draws Over 1,000 Entrants

As many as 220 hopefuls from all five starting flights advance into the final day of action

Flight E, the final one scheduled to be played within the $400 buy-in opening event of the 2018 WSOP Circuit Horseshoe Hammond stop, was completed Saturday at the host casino. More than 1,000 entrants flocked to the venue to register into the tournament and swell its overall field to 2,563.

Day 1E of the event thus drew its largest flight. Registration is now closed and there is just one day left to be played on which a champion will be determined. With the closure of registration into the event, we can now tell how much was generated in prize money and what portion of the prize pool the winner will walk out with.

The tournament featured a guaranteed prize pool of $777,777. The massive field of Flight E helped for the guarantee to be easily surpassed. The total amount of $845,790 was generated from the event’s five flights. The top 220 finishers are set to receive a share of the money, min-cashes starting from $849.

As for the winner, their lion’s share of the prize pool will amount to $124,385. In addition, they will also receive a gold ring from the series. It is yet to be seen whether a new member will join the WSOP Circuit gold ring winners club or the player who claims the opening event title will be someone with previous circuit victories.

Day 1E Highlights

A total of 1,011 entries registered into the tournament through Flight E on Saturday. They generated a prize pool of $333,630 to add to the overall one. As many as 19 levels were played as part of Day 1E and once those were completed, there were just 89 players to have survived through the day. They bagged and tagged for the night and will return to the home casino later today to merge with the hopefuls from the previous two days for one final day of action.

A total of 220 players will return to the host venue to battle it down to a champion. Action is set to resume today at 11 am local time at Horseshoe Hammond which will kindly host the WSOP Circuit for the next week or so. The plan is for a winner to be determined by the end of the day, but it is yet to be seen how action will unfold.

Daniel Kitzis bagged the largest stack at the end of Day 1E with 687,000 in chips. The player will thus enter Day 2 competition second in chips, with Day 1A’s David Larson being the one to top the overall chip counts chart. Larson bagged more than 700,000 at the end of Flight A.

The $400 opening event is one of two on the WSOP Circuit Horseshoe Hammond schedule to feature multiple starting flights, the other one being the $1,700 Main Event. That second tournament is scheduled to kick off on October 19 with the first of two starting flights and $1 million in guaranteed prize money.

Two More Flights of WSOP Circuit Horseshoe Hammond Opening Event Now in the Books

Flights C and D of the WSOP Circuit Horseshoe Hammond $400 No-Limit Hold’em Opening Event bring the overall field to 1,552 contenders

Friday saw the completion of two more starting flights in the $400 buy-in opening event of this year’s WSOP Circuit Horseshoe Hammond stop. Flights C and D together drew a total of 869 entries to bring the overall field to 1,552 contenders.

The tournament features five starting flights this year, one more from its 2017 edition, and a guaranteed prize pool of $777,777, up from $500,000 from last year. There is one more starting flight to take place within the tournament and hopes are that the guarantee will be surpassed.

Flight C of the event was the largest one so far. It attracted 525 entries, or 100 more than Flight A which took place on Thursday at the host casino. The Flight C entrants added the total amount of $181,170 to the overall prize pool. Of all the players who registered via the third starting flight, the top 63 finishers secured a payday of $592.

As many as 19 levels were played within Day 1C, and by their end there were just 50 players left in contention. The final 50 from the third starting flight are to advance into the final Day 2, which will take place Sunday at the host casino. James Gregg emerged as the Flight C chip leader with 400,000, but he was still short of the 717,000 Day 1A’s David Larson bagged.

Flight D Details

The second flight of the day was just as thrilling although a bit less busy. It drew as many as 344 entries who generated a prize pool of $113,520, bringing the overall prize pool to $512,160. Flight D’s top 36 finishers secured a payout on Friday and it amounted to $587.

Only 30 players made it through all the levels played throughout the day to advance into the tournament’s finale. Steve Federspiel accumulated the largest stack of the day, putting 418,000 worth of chips in his bag. He, too, is trailing far behind the overall chip leader. It is yet to be seen whether Larson will remain comfortably on his top spot on the temporary leaderboard after the completion of today’s Flight E, the final one scheduled as part of the tournament.

The survivors from the five starting flights will combine for the first time on Sunday. Day 2 action will kick off at 11 am and play will continue until a winner is determined.

Last year, Jonathan Tamayo (pictured) was crowned the victor. The player collected $101,404 in prize money and his career’s third WSOP Circuit gold ring after outlasting a massive field of 2,349 entrants. The event generated a prize pool of $704,700 last year, beating the $500,000 guarantee.

Around 3% of Bulgaria’s Population Hit by Gambling Addiction

Casino News Daily
Around 3% of Bulgaria’s Population Hit by Gambling Addiction

Despite being the poorest EU country, Bulgaria has a booming gambling industry

More than 200,000 Bulgarians suffer from one form of gambling addiction or another, local news outlet 24 Chasa reports citing information from a report compiled last year. Bulgaria is the poorest nation in the European Union by GNI per capita, but it has a thriving gambling industry now worth around BGN3 billion (€1.5 billion, $1.8 billion).

Bulgarian psychotherapist Anna Todorova has told 24 Chasa that around 53% of the male population of the country and 44% of its female population gambled last year. Introduced several years ago, the so-called scratchcards have turned into Bulgaria’s most popular gambling product. Companies selling those recorded revenue of BGN320 million in 2016, up 30% from the previous year. It is believed that the sector has grown even further over the past two years, mainly thanks to aggressive marketing campaigns.

Ms. Todorova has pointed out that there are three main groups of Bulgaria’s population that are at high risk of developing gambling addiction or related gambling-related issues. She has explained that young people are at the greatest risk as they are more impulsive and the parts of the brain that are dedicated to judgment and decision-making are still developing.

According to the psychotherapist, people with low education, those living in poverty, and pensioners represent the second group of those at high risk to fall victims to one form of gambling addiction or another. The third group, according to Ms. Todorova, includes people who are genetically prone to addiction as well as people who are looking to replace one form of addiction with another.

Gambling Adverts Restrictions

As mentioned earlier, gambling services, particularly ones involving the purchase of the extremely popular scratchcards, are advertised heavily across Bulgarian media, and the growth of the nation’s gambling industry can be largely attributed to the aggressive advertising campaigns run by licensed operators.

Earlier this year, Deputy Prime Minister Valeri Simeonov and his party, the National Front for the Salvation of Bulgaria, introduced a bill calling for the implementation of significant restrictions to the aggressive promotion of gambling services. The piece of legislation also proposed a significant reduction in the number of facilities where scratchcards can be purchased from.

As mentioned above, the local gambling market was worth around BGN3 billion in 2017 or 3% of the nation’s gross domestic product. Minister Simeonov’s bill first needs to be reviewed by European authorities before being implemented, it became known earlier this year. The piece of legislation secured much-needed support from the ruling Citizens for the European Development of Bulgaria party (GERB) as well as from the Bulgarian Socialist Party.

Despite the major political backing, the bill was also criticized by many as too restrictive. According to opponents, massive restrictions in the way gambling services are promoted would hurt tax revenue contributions to the nation’s coffers.

Caesars to Welcome First Guests of Non-Gambling Dubai Resorts in Mid-November

Caesars to Welcome First Guests of Non-Gambling Dubai Resorts in Mid-November

Caesars’ first post-bankruptcy properties set to open doors in Dubai in mid-November

Hotel room bookings are now available for Caesars Entertainment Corp.’s two new non-gaming resorts in Dubai, Casino News Daily has learned. It seems that one of the two properties is set to open doors in mid-November and the other will welcome its first guests in early December, or a little over a year after the Las Vegas gaming and hospitality giant emerged from a lengthy Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

The opening of two resorts in Dubai comes as part of the company’s strategy to diversify its portfolio with non-gaming operations and to expand its brands geographically across different jurisdictions.

News about Caesars’ expansion to the United Arab Emirates first emerged this past spring. The company announced that it would operate two non-gaming resorts as part of the larger Bluewaters Island development project, managed by the state-linked Meraas Holding.

Caesars Palace Bluewaters Dubai and Caesars Bluewaters Dubai will feature as many as 479 hotel rooms, as well as different food and beverage, entertainment, and retail options. As mentioned above, the properties will not offer any casino-style gambling services as this type of activity is prohibited in the UAE and the region as a whole.

Hotel room bookings at Caesars Palace Bluewaters Dubai are available from November 15 onwards. Guests can choose from different options, including rooms with ocean views of the Arabian Gulf. Rates start at AED2,080 per night for a Resort Deluxe King Room overlooking the “lush gardens of Bluewaters Island”. Bookings at Caesars Bluewaters Dubai are available from December 1 onwards. Room rates start from AED1,360 per night for a Resort Deluxe King Room.

Caesars’ Expansion Plans

The company has said that it is definitely looking to expand to the the Middle East. After the upcoming launch of the two Dubai resorts, Caesars will also be eyeing expansion into Saudi Arabia, as it has pointed out. Saudi Arabia is looking to reduce its heavy reliance on oil exports and to develop a non-religious tourism industry which will only make it attractive to Western companies like Caesars.

The Las Vegas company also announced earlier this year that it would develop a non-gaming Caesars Palace-branded resort in Puerto Los Cabos, a popular coastal tourism draw in Mexico. Caesars said it would invest $200 million into that project. Construction work on the beachfront property is expected to commence in the first half of 2019.

Aside from expanding its non-gaming operations across multiple jurisdictions, Caesars might also be looking to extend its global gambling footprint. It has emerged that the company is one of the likely bidders for the operation of a €1-billion casino as part of a larger, €8-billion integrated resort that is planned to be built at the site of the former Ellinikon International Airport near Athens, Greece. Bidding process for the gaming license is yet to be opened by local regulators, but it is believed that Caesars has been among the first major casino operators to have lodged interest in the grand scheme.

Majority of Japanese Gamblers Fail to Tax Big Winnings, Board of Audit Reveals

Majority of Japanese Gamblers Fail to Tax Big Winnings, Board of Audit Reveals

Japanese gamblers tend to avoid declaring big winnings, Board of Audit report finds

Around 80% of all gambling winnings of JPY10 million (approximately $88,500) or over from a single bet are not declared to Japanese tax authorities, local news outlet Asahi Shimbun reports citing findings by the country’s Board of Audit.

The independent body has looked into cases of people winning from horse races operated both by the Japan Racing Association (JRA) and by other operators. The Board of Audit reviewed cases of JRA-run races where a winning bet of JPY100 has generated winnings of more than JPY10 million for the bettor. In cases of races organized by other operators, the board reviewed winning bets of between JPY50 to JPY200.

It detected 530 winning bets which generated winnings of around JPY12.7 billion. The board also looked into 18,200 different cases in which Japanese citizens declared JPY10 million or over to tax authority as a temporary or miscellaneous income in 2015. Of those filings, only 50 appeared to have been submitted by gamblers who won more than JPY10 million or over from a single bet. The approximate amount of between JPY2 billion and JPY3 billion in gambling winnings was thus declared, while JPY10 billion failed to be taxed.

Commenting on the Board of Audit’s findings, a tax official told the Asahi Shimbun that it is quite difficult to detect how much is earned by gamblers annually as the declaration of winnings to tax authorities is based on “the honor system” and is “voluntary”.

Proposed Measures in the Way Gambling Winnings Are Declared

Ideas have been pitched that gambling operators be required to provide the same type of information to tax authorities as life insurance companies. At present, insurers are obligated to present tax authorities with the names of benefits recipients as well as with the exact amount each of them receives.

It has also emerged that the Board of Audit will request from government ministries and agencies that are concerned with the operation of gambling services by public entities to enhance the system that encourages gamblers to voluntarily declare bigger winnings.

Japan’s Board of Audit is a substantially independent body that is tasked with reviewing expenditures made by the government and reporting on those as well recommending possible improvements in the current system.

Japan is currently in the process of building its casino gambling industry after the government legalized Las Vegas-style gambling activities late in 2016 and passed a second bill on the matter earlier this year. According to media reports, the government has opened a discussion on how casino winnings will be taxed once the nation’s first casinos open doors (sometime in the early- to mid-2020s).

Stakes are big as the last person standing will collect a cash prize of $129,654, a gold ring, and an automatic entry into the season-ending Global Casino Championship that will be payed next August and will award a WSOP gold bracelet to the winner.

But while there is quite some time until the Global Casino Championship, the winner of the Horseshoe Southern Indiana is just hours away from being determined.

The field of this year’s edition of the tournament generated a prize pool of $589,335. The money was split into 45 payouts, min-cashes starting from $2,664. The bubble burst at some point on Day 2 of the event.

Day 2 Recap

Day 2 action unfolded quite quickly on Sunday at the host venue. It was not long after cards were thrown in the air that the first elimination of the day occurred. And what followed next was a storm of eliminations. Action did not reduce speed after the bubble burst and players continued walking out in quick succession.

Notables who failed to make it through the end of the day but cashed from the tournament included former WSOP gold bracelet winner Alan Percal as well as former WSOP Circuit gold ring winners Ari Engel, Neil Scott, and Timothy Miles, among others. Justin Boggs, last year’s champ of the Main Event at Horseshoe Southern Indiana, departed in 23rd place. He received a consolation prize of $4,874 for failing to defend his title.

As mentioned earlier, the final day of the event will kick off with eight players still in contention for the title and the accompanying first-place prize and gold ring. David Sill from Titusville, Florida will be leading the eight finalists with a stack of 3.125 million. The player will kick off action as the only one to have passed the three-million mark.

Heather Alcorn with 2.76 million and one-time gold ring winner Kevin Iacofano 2.295 million will come into Day 3 as the other two top stacks. Two-time gold ring winner Michael Lech is also among those in contention. However, the player who sports a WSOP bankroll of nearly $600,000 will start Day 3 action as the short stack.

Play is set to resume today at 1 pm local time at the host casino. As already pointed out, the eight finalists will play down to a winner. With that, the WSOP Circuit will wrap up its Horseshoe Southern Indiana stop and will head to Horseshoe Hammond where its next festival is slated to begin on October 11.

Justin Boggs Vies for Second WSOP Circuit Main Event Title at Horseshoe Southern Indiana

Casino News Daily
Justin Boggs Vies for Second WSOP Circuit Main Event Title at Horseshoe Southern Indiana

Justin Boggs eyes second Horseshoe Southern Indiana Main Event title, after claiming his first one this time last year

Another day has passed at Horseshoe Southern Indiana where a WSOP Circuit stop is currently taking place, and it has produced a plethora of thrilling stories from the poker tables. But what was perhaps the biggest story of that day was defending Horseshoe Southern Indiana Main Event champ Justin Boggs vying for a back-to-back title at the riverboat casino.

Day 1B of the $1,700 Main Event was played on Saturday. It saw Boggs enter it to make it through the 15 levels played throughout the day, and finally bag and tag 255,500 at the end of the night. Boggs thus secured a spot among the top 15 chip stacks into Day 2 of the prestigious tournament.

Precisely a year ago, Boggs swept through the field of the $1,675 Main Event at Horseshoe Southern Indiana for his first WSOP Circuit gold ring and a cash prize of $139,920. There are two more days of play within this year’s edition of the tournament and it is yet to be seen whether the player will be able to defend his well-deserved title.

The Main Event drew a total of 389 entries this year who generated a prize pool of $589,307. The top 45 spots will get paid, with min-cashes starting from $2,663 and going all the way up to the first-place prize of $129,953.

Highlights from Day 1B

Day 1B of the tournament was busier than the first starting flight. Tournament records show that Flight B drew 223 entrants to add to the 166 competitors who registered into the Main Event through Flight A, played at the host casino on Friday.

The second, and final, flight was wrapped up with 43 hopefuls bagging and tagging for the night. Michael Shanahan was the player who emerged as the chip leader last night. He put 374,500 worth in chips in his bag to top not only the Flight B leaderboard but also the overall chip counts chart, meaning that the player will enter Day 2 action in the comfortable position of the overall chip leader.

Melih “Turk” Birdal ranks second in the overall leaderboard with 356,000. The player entered the competition through Flight B. Day 1A chip leader James Hill is rounding out top three of the chip counts chart with 343,000.

Day 2 action is set to kick off at 1 pm local time. The 43 survivors from Flight B will be joined by the 31 players who made it through Day 1A for a day full of quality poker action. The players will fight for a paid spot as the money bubble is expected to burst at some point today. The final day of the tournament will be played tomorrow at the host casino. The survivors from today will gather for the last time to play down to a champion.

James Hill Leads 31 Hopefuls after WSOP Circuit Horseshoe Southern Indiana Main Event Day 1A

Main Event action resumes today at the host casino Horseshoe Southern Indiana

James Hill bagged the largest stack at the end of the first of two flights in the ongoing WSOP Circuit Horseshoe Southern Indiana $1,700 Main Event. The tournament kicked off yesterday at the host casino and it will take through October 8 for the winner to be determined.

As many as 166 players registered into the Main Event on Day 1A, but only 31 of them made it through all 15 levels that were played at the riverboat gambling venue as part of the first starting flight.

As mentioned above, it was Hill who had the largest stack at the end of the day. The player put 343,000 into his end-of-the-day bag. He will be leading the 31 survivors into Day 2 of the tournament, which is set to be played on Sunday at the host facility.

Asked to comment on his performance, Hill, a Louisville, Kentucky resident, said that he was playing “real good”. Coming close behind Hill, Kevin Iacofano from Cincinnati, Ohio scooped the second largest stack last night with 334,000. Micheal Oldfather from White Salmon, Washington ranks third in the temporary chip counts chart, after accumulating a stack of 314,500 in chips throughout Day 1A.

The likes of Ari Engel, Kevin Davis, and Timothy Miles were among the notables to bag and tag for the night. Record-breaking eleven-time gold ring winner Maurice Hawkins was among the Day 1A entries, but the player got eliminated before the end of the day. Seven-time gold ring winner Vincent Moscati took a shot, as well, but did not make it through the 15 levels played on Friday.

Day 1B

The second starting flight of the Main Event is set to be played today at the host venue. Action will kick off at 11 am local time. A total of 15 levels will be played, just as on Day 1A, and registration will remain open until the beginning of Level 13 of play. This means that the overall prize pool and the places paid might be revealed by organizers by the end of the night.

The survivors from the second starting flight will join the 31 Day 1A hopefuls on Sunday at the host casino so that the two fields are combined for the first time. Action on Sunday is set to kick off at 1 pm local time. The final day of the tournament will be played on Monday. With the conclusion of the Main Event, the WSOP Circuit wrap up its Horseshoe Southern Indiana stop and will head for Horseshoe Hammond where its next stop is set to start later next week.

While the prize pool of the Horseshoe Southern Indiana Main Event as well as the first-place prize for the winner are yet to be announced, it should be noted that the champion will receive a gold ring from the popular poker series as well as an automatic entry into next year’s Global Casino Championship.

Casino Boss Sheldon Adelson Buys $40-Million Penthouse in Tel Aviv’s Akirov Towers

Casino News Daily
Casino Boss Sheldon Adelson Buys $40-Million Penthouse in Tel Aviv’s Akirov Towers

The Las Vegas casino boss owns one more apartment in the locally popular residential towers

US casino mogul Sheldon Adelson has increased his real estate portfolio with the recent purchase of a penthouse in one of the Akirov Towers in Tel Aviv, local financial news outlet the Globes reports. Mr. Adelson has reportedly paid $40 million for the luxury apartment.

Located on Pinkas Street in Old North Tel Aviv, the Akirov Towers were designed by Moore Yaski Sivan Architects and were built in the 2000s. The three residential towers each feature 34 stories and are nearly identical in height.

According to the Globes, Mr. Adelson bought the penthouse, which occupies the 33rd and 34th floors of the middle tower, in late July for an asking price of $40 million. The Las Vegas casino owner purchased the apartment from the sons of late Israeli business magnate and philanthropist Sammy Ofer. The businessman passed away in 2011.

The luxury penthouse occupies 900 square meters and has a 150-square-meter balcony with a panoramic view of Tel Aviv. The Akirov Towers are among the city’s most popular and coveted addresses. And the recently purchased apartment is not the only unit owned by the Adelson family in the towers. The Globes reports that a separate unit has previously been registered in the name of Mr. Adelson’s wife Miriam Adelson.

With estimated net worth of $35 billion (Forbes: October 5, 2018), Mr. Adelson is one of the world’s richest people. He is the founder, Chairman, and CEO of Las Vegas gaming and hospitality giant Las Vegas Sands. The businessman and his wife are major donors of different Jewish organizations. Most recently, they donated $70 million to Birthright, a program aiming to bring young Jewish adults to Israel on short educational trips.

Other Notables Owning Units in Akirov Towers

The Adelsons are not the only high-profile owners of apartments in the locally popular residential towers. Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak has, too, previously owned a unit in Akirov Towers, which he sold to another gambling boss several years ago.

As reported by local media, it was Playtech founder Teddy Sagi who bought the apartment on the 31sr floor in one of the three towers. The businessman reportedly paid the amount of NIS26.5 million for the unit previously owned by Mr. Barak.

Mr. Sagi actually has quite an impressive real estate portfolio across his homeland. Last spring, he bought two penthouse apartments in the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Herzliya for NIS32 million. In 2010, he bought a house in the affluent Herliya Pituah beachfront neighborhood for NIS145 million. The businessman also owns a triplex on the 44-46th floors of Tel Aviv’s W Tower, which he has purchased from local real estate developer Moshe Peterburg for NIS19 million.
