DraftKings Debuts Physical Sportsbook at Mississippi’s Scarlet Pearl Casino

DraftKings opens its first physical betting facility at Mississippi’s Scarlet Pearl Casino

Daily fantasy sports operator DraftKings has further ventured into the growing US sports betting field through a recently penned agreement with Scarlet Pearl Casino Resort in D’Iberville, Mississippi. Their partnership will see DraftKings launch its first physical sportsbook.

The DraftKings at Scarlet Pearl Sportsbook is set to debut on Friday, November 16. The facility will replace Scarlet Pearl’s existing PRL Bar.

Patrons will be able to place their bets on a number of different sports, including college and professional football. In a press release from earlier today, the DFS company also said that that its sportsbook will be offering live, in-game betting with three windows. The facility is anticipated to launch on-site kiosks and an on-premise mobile app pending regulatory approval from the Mississippi Gaming Commission.

While the sportsbook at Scarlet Pearl Casino will be DraftKings’ first physical betting facility, it should be noted that the company is no stranger to sports betting. In industry first, it launched its debut mobile betting app in New Jersey on August 1 with its local partner, Resorts Casino Hotel.

DraftKings has helped its Resorts become the leader in the provision of sports betting services in New Jersey’s nascent betting market. The Atlantic City casino property reported overall sports betting revenue, including digital and revenue generated from its physical sportsbook, of more than $8.8 million in September. October figures are yet to be released by the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement.

Commenting on newly announced partnership with Scarlet Pearl Casino, DraftKings Co-founder and Chief Revenue Officer, said that they are “excited to bring and offer an innovative sports betting experience to sports fans in one of the largest and most competitive gaming markets in the US.”

Sports Betting to Become DraftKings’ Primary Product

As mentioned above, DraftKings has originally commenced operations as a daily fantasy sports operator. However, the company intends to extend its sports betting footprint further as the US market is expanding rapidly, following the mid-May decision of the US Supreme Court to strike down the long-standing federal ban on wagering on professional and collegiate sporting events.

In a recent interview for Yahoo Finance, DraftKings’ CEO, Jason Robins, said that his company was gearing up for a time when sports betting would become its main source of revenue. Currently, DFS contests are DraftKings’ main product.

Mr. Robins added that while waiting for sports wagering to take over as their main operation, they recorded an increase interest in their fantasy product as people have been responding to the overall excitement created by the latest betting developments in the country. Moreover, residents of states where betting was yet to be legalized were trying out DraftKings’ DFS offering while awaiting the arrival of legal sports betting, Mr. Robins added during his recent interview.

Peter Jaksland Leads 19 Survivors into Final Day of WPTDeepStacks Brussels Main Event

Casino News Daily
Peter Jaksland Leads 19 Survivors into Final Day of WPTDeepStacks Brussels Main Event

Denmark’s Peter Jaksland eyes first WPTDeepStacks Main Event title, leads 19 contenders into the final day of action in Brussels

Day 2 of the WPTDeepStacks Brussels Main Event is now in the books and what a day it was. Over its course, the field of the tournament was further reduced until there were just 19 players left when organizers called it a wrap last night at the host venue, Grand Viage Casino.

The day kicked off with 187 contenders who had advanced from the event’s three starting flights. Albano Llani was the player to lead the pack of survivors with a stack of 226,000. However, despite his initial advantage, he was eliminated in 59th place later in the day.

Denmark’s Peter Jaksland was the player to bag the largest stack at the end of Day 2. The player put 1.565 million into his bag to secure himself with a somewhat comfortable start of the tournament’s final day of action. Jaksland has nearly $332,000 in life tournament earnings recorded under his name and he amassed around a third of that amount in Vegas earlier this year, when he scooped a $98,340 in prize money. He topped a €1,500 tournament in Dublin for another five-figure payout shortly after to further boost his bankroll.

Now, the Danish player is seeking to win his third five-figure cash of the year. He can actually win his first six-figure payout if he goes all the way and wins the Main Event at Brussels for €110,000.

19 left. Day 3. Proud chipleader among great poker players for day 3. Follow Sunday at 1pm. Lets finish this one. #onetime #wpt #WPTDSBrussels

— Peter Jaksland (@PeterJaksland) November 11, 2018

Other Contenders

But while Jaksland is in a great starting position to take an aim at the title and the lion’s share of the prize pool, it should be noted that he has quite some competition, including a former WPT champion. Guillaume Darcourt, a WPT Bucharest champ with live tournament earnings of more than $315,000, is among the players still in contention for the WPTDeepStacks Brussels title.

Darcourt had an action-packed Day 2 of the tournament. At one point, the player was down to just 12 big blinds. Then a string of successful hands helped him build a solid tack of over 800,000 within a single level of play. He finally lost two all-in confrontations to eventually reduce his stack to just 27 big blinds. However, the road to victory is not always an easy one and Darcourt still has the chance to add another WPT-branded title to his collection.

Day 3 of the tournament kicks off at 1 pm local time with 60-minute levels and blinds standing at 10,000/20,000/20,000. The remaining 19 survivors will play down to a champion, who will collect €110,000 in prize money as well as a €2,000 package into the season-ending WPT European Championships DeepStacks event.

All 19 hopefuls are guaranteed a minimum cash of €4,900. And those who make it to the final table will cash out no less than €13,550 from the Main Event.

WPTDeepStacks Brussels Main Event Day 2 Kicks Off with 187 Hopefuls

Casino News Daily
WPTDeepStacks Brussels Main Event Day 2 Kicks Off with 187 Hopefuls

WPTDeepStacks Brussels draws a massive 530-person field, 187 advance into Day 2

Registration for the WPTDeepStacks Brussels Main Event closed last night when the final two of three starting flights were wrapped. All in all, the latest edition of the tournament drew 530 entrants. However, only 187 of them made it through their respective starting flights and will return to the host casino – Grand Casino Brussels Viage – to continue their fight for the title and the first-place prize.

Action on Friday kicked off with Day 1B of the €1,200 buy-in Main Event. And it was a pretty busy day as the second starting flight saw 297 entries register for a chance at becoming WPTDeepStacks’ brand new Main Event champion.

Once all 12 levels scheduled for the day were complete, it was Albania’s Llani Albano who held the largest stack. The player put 226,000 into his bag last night to secure a comfortable entry into Day 2. Albano is among the top stacks on the overall chip counts chart with only three players, all of whom registered in the event on Day 1A, standing above him in the temporary ranking. It will be Mehdi Merai, Day 1A’s chip leader, who will be leading the remaining survivors into Day 2 of the Main Event. Merai scooped 276,500 at the end of his respective flight.

Fresh Off WPTDeepStacks Triumph

It should be noted that Albano is no stranger to WPT success. He has previously taken down a WPT National event namely in Brussels. And just a few days ago, the player captured the title in the WPTDeepStacks Brussels opening event. That should be giving him quite some confidence as the player is heading into Day 2 of the Main Event.

As mentioned earlier, there were two starting flights to be played on Friday at the host casino. Day 1C of the tournament featured a turbo format and kicked off at 10 pm, giving interested players one final chance to enter the Main Event.

Day 1C drew 89 contestants, but only 39 of them made it through the very end to add up to the mix of survivors. Guillaume Darcourt finished the day as the chip leader with 165,000.

All the remaining hopefuls are set to return to the host venue today at 2 pm local time to play Day 2 of the tournament. The field of players will be reduced even further on the second day of poker action. The final day will be played tomorrow when a winner will be crowned and awarded the lion’s share of the prize pool. Information about the final prize pool and the places paid is yet to be released by organizers.

Greek poker pro Ioannis Angelou-Konstas is the defending WPTDeepStacks Brussels champ. The player outlasted a field of 315 entries this past spring to claim the Main Event title and €75,000 in prize money.

Philippines’ President Needs No Executive Order to Ban Casinos on Boracay, Justice Secretary Admits

Casino News Daily
Philippines’ President Needs No Executive Order to Ban Casinos on Boracay, Justice Secretary Admits

The Philippines’ Justice Secretary said today that President Duterte does not need an executive order, but one is highly recommended as the fastest way to a lasting casino ban

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte can prevent casino operations from being conducted on the Boracay Island even without an Executive Order (EO), Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra told local news outlet ABS-CBN News earlier today.

Mr. Guevarra’s comments emerged a day after President Duterte himself pointed out that he did not need an EO to implement a no-casino policy on Boracay. The Philippines’ top official went on to say that it was the people of Boracay who did not want gambling venues in the popular tourism draw and that it was his duty to listen to what his people wanted and make sure there would be no casinos there.

In today’s comments, Mr. Guevarra noted that President Duterte has the power and tools to ban casinos from operating on the island, which was recently reopened after a six-month environmental cleanup. However, the Justice Secretary added that an EO is still a measure he highly recommends as it “sets a long-term policy and provides a formal framework for all government actions pertaining to the subject matter.”

With his latest comments, Mr. Guevarra reiterated his opinion on the issue. Last month, the official penned a letter to Tourism Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat sayind that the Department of Tourism should urge President Duterte to issue an EO as it was “the most expedient and effective” means to stop gambling operations on the island.

Boracay has long been one of the most popular tourism destinations in the Philippines. According to official statistics, the island has annually welcomed more than 2 million tourists over the past several years.

The island was shuttered in late April for a six-month environmental cleanup, following the publication of an environmental review of the island back in February. The review found that many Boracay businesses had for years discharged untreated waste water directly into the sea and that a number of developments had been undertaken without the necessary construction permits being obtained.

Enraged by those findings, President Duterte called the island a cesspool and ordered its closure for a period of six months, during which an environmental cleanup would be carried out.

President Duterte’s War on Casinos

News emerged shortly before Boracay’s closure that Macau hotel and casino operator Galaxy Entertainment Corp. and its local partner, Leisure and Resorts World Corporation, had secured a provisional license from PAGCOR, the country’s gambling regulator, for the construction of a $500-million resort on the island.

The announcement of Galaxy’s project enraged President Duterte, who has never been a big fan of gambling and has made that quite clear, even more. What followed was a new wave of his continued crackdown on everything gambling. The top official vowed to prevent the materialization of Galaxy’s casino scheme and to purge Boracay from all existing gambling operations. The island casino ban extended to the rest of the country as the President has repeatedly pointed out that there will be no new casinos anywhere in the Philippines.

He reiterated his intentions to prevent any proposed expansion of the nation’s casino industry yesterday, saying that the proliferation of gambling spurs growth in crime rates, including crimes related to drug dealing and kidnappings as well as financial crimes.

Grey market sees double-digit growth ahead of new gambling law’s implementation

Sweden’s gambling market was worth SEK16.8 billion (approximately $1.9 billion) during the first three quarters of the year, the country’s gambling regulator, Lotteriinspektionen, revealed on Thursday.

And while revenue from locally licensed operators accounted for the greater portion of the reported figure, internationally licensed gambling companies servicing Swedish players were the main driver of growth over the first nine months of 2018.

The reported revenue figure represented an increase of 1.2% from the corresponding period in 2017. Swedish gambling companies generated revenue of SEK12.2 billion (approx. $1.3 billion) over the reviewed period, down 2.4% year-on-year. Revenue from international operations totaled SEK4.5 billion (approx. $$96.4 million), reflecting an increase of 12.4% from the prior year.

According to Lotteriinspektionen’s latest report, local operators accounted for 73% of the market, while non-Swedish ones held a 27% market share during the first nine months of the year.

The online gambling sector was the one to record the biggest growth during the reviewed period. While revenue from land-based gambling services decreased 8.2% in the first three quarters of the year, online gambling figures rose 12.9%. Online betting revenue was up 13.6% year-on-year, while the online casino sector grew 11.9%. Sweden-licensed gambling operators are banned from providing online casino games under the country’s current gambling law, which means that particular sector is entirely represented by international companies.

In case you missed it:

Why Has Sweden’s Gambling Market Re-Regulation Created Such a Big Buzz?

Most New Gambling Accounts Opened with Foreign Companies

A recently released report by Swedish consultancy firm Mediavision revealed that the majority of online gambling registrations made over the past year were with internationally licensed companies. Accounts opened with such companies represented a 60% of all new registrations, the firm has found.

It was also reported that the number of Swedes who have an online gambling account has increased 12% from last year. Around 60% of people aged between 18-74 seem to be gambling online with both locally licensed and foreign providers of gaming and betting services.

According to Mediavision’s Mazyar Sajjadi, a possible explanation on why Swedish gamblers have preferred international companies to local ones over the past year was the fact that foreign gambling websites feature special offers and deposit bonuses to lure more customers. Licensed gambling companies are prohibited from offering any such incentives.

Sweden is set to scrap the current gambling monopoly system on January 1, 2019, when its new gambling law is to take force. Under the new rules, international companies will be able to obtain licenses from the local gambling regulator and to operate in a regulated environment.

Among many other things, the new law will also close a loophole that has made it possible for unlicensed companies to advertise their services across Swedish media, even though their presence in the country has not been exactly legal. Only locally licensed companies will be able to advertise their products in Sweden once the new regulations come into effect.

According to a report by research firm Kantar Sifo from earlier this year, several foreign gambling companies were among Sweden’s spendiest advertisers in 2017. Kindred Group and LeoVegas, both hailing namely from Sweden but operating from Malta, ranked among the top 20 advertisers of 2017 by ad spending. The former spent a total of SEK443.1 million on marketing its products in Sweden, while the latter’s marketing costs totaled SEK314 million.

Luis Henrique Kamei Wins Latest Kings Series of Poker Main Event

Casino News Daily
Luis Henrique Kamei Wins Latest Kings Series of Poker Main Event

Poker pro Luis Henrique Shinike Kamei claims a first-place prize of R$190,000 and the champion bracelet

Kings Series of Poker (KSOP) has crowned its latest Main Event champion only a few days ago. This year’s sixth installment of one of Brazil’s most popular poker series took place from October 31 through November 6 at Actuall Convention Hotel in the city of Belo Horizonte.

The festival featured 26 tournaments and the four-day Main Event was the star of the series. The tournament attracted a massive field of 717 entries who eventually crashed the guaranteed prize pool of R$1 million to generate R$2.1 million in prize money.

Poker pro Luis Henrique Shinike Kamei was the player to emerge as the victor of the Main Event and to be awarded the tournament trophy and a first-place prize of R$190,000. Kamei also received the shiny champion bracelet to remember his participation and eventual win in the series.

The Main Event featured five starting flights and three more days of action. After certain ups and downs throughout the days, Kamei eventually entered the final table of the Main Event as the chip leader. He maintained his advantage for quite a while, but eventually entered the heads-up match, the final stage of the game, as the player holding the smaller stack.

Action-Packed Heads-Up

Kamei faced Tiago Toscano in the final two-handed match. Despite his initial disadvantage at the start of the duel, an important hand helped Kamei improve his situation and eventually build a formidable stack.

And on what turned out to be the final hand in play, the two players got it all in on the flop. Kamei had the advantage at that point and the blank turn and river cards did little to help his opponent move ahead. As mentioned above, Kamei collected R$190,000 from the Main Event’s prize pool, while Toscano had to settle for R$120,000.

Here it is important to note that at some point during three-handed play, Kamei, Toscano and Guilherme Gomes, the third-place finisher in the tournament, agreed to strike a deal and split what had left of the prize pool. Gomes took home R$150,000.

Kamei is a familiar name across Brazil’s poker community. The player started playing poker in 2006. In his post-victory interview, he said that he got into the game by watching it on television. He then began buying books and studying its fundamentals together with his brother. Kamei initially played poker online. Then he moved to Curitiba and that was when he developed a real passion for the game, the player recalled.

Of becoming the latest KSOP champion, Kamei said that the feeling was incredible. The winner thanked his rail and dedicated his latest poker title to his family and his girlfriend.

The Belo Horizonte festival was actually the final leg of this year’s edition of the KSOP. As mentioned earlier, the major poker event featured 26 tournaments that were played over the course of the past week.

Genting Malaysia to Review Marketing Expenditure as New Casino Tax Hits Stock

Genting Malaysia to review marketing expenditure ahead of the introduction of a higher casino tax

Genting Malaysia Bhd is moving to assess the full implications of the recently introduced increase in annual casino license fees and gambling taxes, the gaming and hospitality company said today in a filing to Bursa Malaysia.

Malaysian Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng introduced the country’s 2019 budget plan this past Friday. Stricken by financial scandals and growing budget deficit, Malaysia will implement higher casino and gaming machine license fees as well as higher taxes on those operations as part of its effort to mend its ailing economy, it became known last week.

Under the new budget plan, casino operators will be required to pay a MYR150-million annual license fee, up from MYR120 million. In addition, land-based casinos will be taxed at 35% on their annual gross income from January 1, 2019, when the reforms are set to take force.

Slot machine operators in Malaysia will have to pay an annual license fee of MYR50,000, up from MYR10,000. Their operations will be taxed at 30% on annual gross proceeds from next year, up from the current rate of 20%.

Looming Review of Marketing Expenditure

In today’s filing, Genting Malaysia said that it is assessing the implications of the new tax regime and that it will “take the appropriate next course of action which includes a review of its marketing expenditure and cost structure” in a bid to mitigate the imminent impact of the new tax and license fee.

Genting Malaysia operates the Resorts World Genting integrated resort in its homeland. The property is located on the peak of Mount Ulu Kali not far from the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur. Among multiple other facilities, the property features a full-blown casino with slot machines and gaming tables.

The company’s shares closed at a three-year low on Monday in a knee-jerk reaction to Friday’s introduction of the new budget plan. The stock has improved since then, closing at MYR3.64 today for a market capitalization of MYR20.579 billion (approx. $4.9 billion).

First reports about Malaysia’s plans to increase gambling taxes and licensing fees emerged in October. Back then, analysts from two research houses pointed out that Genting Malaysia would not suffer any major negative impact from a potential implementation of higher rates. According to Nomura International and Maybank Kim Eng Research experts, the planned opening of new attractions at Resorts World Genting next year would help the company weather any looming reforms.

The gaming and hospitality operator has previously unveiled plans to add 1,500 hotel rooms at its resort as well as the 20th Century Fox World and the Skytropolis theme parks. Genting Malaysia has also pointed out that it targets 30 million visits at the property by 2020. Resorts World Genting welcomed around 22 million visitors last year.

Stephen Song Hops Into Final Day of WSOP Circuit Harveys Lake Tahoe Main Event as Chip Leader

There are four players left in contention, each of them is a former WSOP Circuit gold ring winner

The WSOP Circuit Harveys Lake Tahoe $1,700 Main Event is drawing to a close with just four players left in contention after Day 2 of the tournament. Stephen Song, a former gold ring winner, is leading the pack of four into the final day of action, which is set to start today at noon local time.

It was an action-packed Day 2 at the host casino. There were 54 players to start the day, with those being the survivors from the event’s two starting flights. Michael Hubbard was leading the remaining hopefuls. However, despite his initial advantage, the player eventually busted in 8th place.

The remaining contenders were just nine bustouts away from the money bubble when cards were thrown in the air for Day 2 action. Eight of those eliminations occurred quite quickly. However, players played for over 40 minutes before the unfortunate bubble boy was eliminated. And it was Frank Pezzullo who became the last player to leave empty-handed.

All in all, this year’s edition of the Main Event at Harveys Lake Tahoe drew 442 entries. They generated a prize pool of $669,630. The money was split into payouts for the top 45 finishers. Min-cashes were worth $3,027. Each of the remaining four survivors is guaranteed at least $49,392 from the prize pool. And the winner will go home with $147,314 and a shiny new ring.

Pack of Former Gold Ring Winners

As mentioned earlier, it will be Stephen Song who will be leading the group of four players when the final day of action kicks off. The player bagged and tagged 3.88 million last night. It should also be noted that Song captured his first-ever gold ring from the series just a few days ago. He bested the field of the $400 No-Limit Hold’em (1-Day) event at Harveys Lake Tahoe for the gold piece and $13,901 in prize money.

Song is followed closely behind by three-time gold ring winner Brett Murray, who scooped 3.8 million in chips last night. Back in September, Murray took down the Main Event of the WSOP Circuit’s Thunder Valley stop.

The other two players who made it through Day 2 have, too, previously won gold rings from the series. Scott Sanders, who came into the Main Event fresh off a triumph in the $400 Monster Stack at Harveys Lake Tahoe, will start Day 3 play with 3.525 million in chips. Two-time gold ring winner Nick Pupillo rounds out the final four with a stack of 2.15 million.

Day 3 action begins today at noon local time at the host casino. The finalists will play down to a champion. As mentioned above, the winner will go home with a six-figure payout and a gold ring. In addition, he will secure a seat into the season-ending Global Casino Championship, which will be played next summer.

Las Vegas Casino Giants MGM and Caesars Reportedly in Merger Talks

Las Vegas Casino Giants MGM and Caesars Reportedly in Merger Talks

New round of merger reports link Caesars to MGM; potential tie-up will create a $20-plus-billion hotel and casino behemoth

Las Vegas casino giants MGM Resorts International and Caesars Entertainment Corp. are reportedly discussing a merger to create a behemoth company that would control about half of the Las Vegas and Atlantic City gaming and hospitality markets, the New York Post reported citing unnamed sources familiar with the ongoing talks.

News about a potential merger of the two operators arrive shortly after it became known that Caesars has rejected a reverse takeover offer from businessman Tilman Fertitta, owner of the smaller Golden Nugget hotel and casino chain. Caesars said during its Q3 financial results conference last week that Mr. Fertitta’s offer was “not consistent with [the company’s] plans to create and enhance shareholder value.”

According to NY Post sources, MGM has tapped investment bank Morgan Stanley and law firm Weil, Gotshal & Manges to study a potential merger with Caesars. However, there is still no offer on the table, sources have pointed out.

People familiar with the matter have also revealed that activist hedge funds, which collectively own about a quarter of Caesars, have been pushing for a MGM tie-up for some time now. A merger of the two operators would create a behemoth gambling giant with a market capitalization of more than $21 billion. According to the NY Post’s sources, Canyon Partners, which owns shares in both Caesars and MGM, is among the hedge funds supporting a deal between the two companies.

It is also important to note that in the case of a merger, MGM and Caesars will together own about a half of all Las Vegas and Atlantic City hotel rooms, which could result in competition authorities raising concerns over the impact of a potential tie-up.

Caesars Sacks CEO to Pave Way for Sale

During its Q3 financial results conference last week, Caesars announced that its CEO and President, Mark Frissora, would step down in February 2019 after three years at the operator’s helm. According to the NY Post, Mr. Frissora was actually dethroned because he was largely opposed to the company’s sale and his opinion on the matter was clashing with that of investors.

Sources believe that Apollo Global Management, which together with TPG Global are currently Caesars’ largest shareholders, supports a sale. In addition, reports emerged not long ago that hedge fund HG Vora Capital Management has quietly built a nearly 5% stake in the Las Vegas casino giant and has been trying to persuade it to consider divestiture of assets or an outright sale.

According to the NY Post, Caesars might be having other suitors besides MGM. Sources believe that Wynn Resorts and Malaysia’s Genting Group could, too, be interested in a tie-up with the Las Vegas gambling giant. Private equity firms that hold licenses to operate casino might, too, be in the mix, according to sources. The Blackstone Group, which purchased Spanish gambling company Cirsa earlier this year, was mentioned as one such private equity firm that might be eying Caesars.

Michael Hubbard Assumes Overall Chip Lead after WSOP Circuit Harveys Lake Tahoe Main Event Day 1B

Michael Hubbard Assumes Overall Chip Lead after WSOP Circuit Harveys Lake Tahoe Main Event Day 1B

Michael Hubbard leads 54 survivors into Day 2, defending champ Max Young out

The WSOP Circuit Harveys Lake Tahoe Main Event kicked off on Friday with the first of two starting flights to draw 176 entries. And Day 1B was even busier at the host casino on Saturday. As many as 266 entrants registered in the tournament through that second starting flight, but only 32 of them survived until the very end.

Michael Hubbard, a player from Windsor, California, surged into the chip lead and eventually bagged 856,000 after a terrific run throughout the day. The player will lead the remaining 32 hopefuls from Day 1B as well as the Day 1A survivors into Day 2 of action as the overall chip leader.

The player is 300,000 clear of his nearest opponent who happens to be Khoa Tran with 550,000. Sam Renshaw with 547,500 rounds out the top three of the temporary leaderboard. All three players entered the Main Event through Flight B. Five-time gold ring winner Scott Steward was the Day 1A chip leader. However, after Day 1B, the player now stands fourth on the chip counts chart.

Stacked Field

All in all, this year’s edition of the Harveys Lake Tahoe Main Event drew 442 entries through its two starting flights. A prize pool of $669,930 was thus generated. The top 45 finishers will receive a share of the money. A minimum cash is worth $3,027, but all remaining contenders are certainly eying the top prize of $147,314 and the accompanying gold ring. It is also important to note that the Main Event champion will secure a seat into the season-ending Global Casino Championship.

Day 2 of the tournament is slated to be played today from noon local time at the host casino. The 54 survivors are just nine eliminations away from the money bubble. The Day 2 survivors will next return to Harveys Lake Tahoe on Monday when the champion will be determined.

It should also be noted that Hubbard is leading a star-studded group of players into the event’s second day of action, including record-breaking gold ring winner Valentin Vornicu, who is vying for his 13th title from the WSOP Circuit series.

Other notables still in contention include seven-time gold ring winner Vinny Moscati, five-time gold ring winner Scott Steward, Brett Murray, proud holder of three pieces of WSOP Circuit jewelry, and gold bracelet winner Bryan Piccioli, among others.

Max Young, the defending champion, registered into the event on Day 1B. However, the player got eliminated late into the day, thus missing the chance to score a back-to-back Main Event win at Harveys Lake Tahoe.

Scott Steward Leads Star-Studded Pack of WSOP Circuit Harveys Lake Tahoe Main Event Day 1A Survivors

Casino News Daily
Scott Steward Leads Star-Studded Pack of WSOP Circuit Harveys Lake Tahoe Main Event Day 1A Survivors

Scott Steward eyes sixth WSOP Circuit gold ring, leading Day 1A’s 22 survivors into Harveys Lake Tahoe Main Event Day 2

It was a busy day of poker at Harveys Lake Tahoe Casino as the Main Event of the current WSOP Circuit stop kicked off Friday morning with the first of two starting flights. As many as 176 entries registered into the tournament through Flight 1, but after long 17 levels of play, there were only 22 hopefuls left to advance into Sunday’s Day 2.

It was Scott Steward to end Day 1A as the chip leader. The player built a solid stack of 482,000 throughout the day from a starting stack of just 30,000. Steward, a Lakewood, California poker pro, is vying for his sixth gold ring from the series.

The player captured his last ring in August 2017, when he topped the field of the $2,200 High Roller at Harrah’s Cherokee, good for a cash prize of $63,399. It is also important to note that Steward has been a WSOP Circuit regular and has cashed in 41 series events over the years, accumulating earnings of more than $510,104. He also has also recorded WSOP and WSOP Europe in-the-money finishes under his name. His overall WSOP earnings currently stand at $1,078,698, but given his regular participation in tournaments, he is only poised to grow his bankroll even more.

Valentin Vornicu among Top Stacks

Trailing close behind Steward is Robert Georato, a three-time gold ring winner, with 454,000. Record-breaking gold ring winner Valentin Vornicu rounds out the top three chip stacks with 453,000 after Day 1A. Vornicu is looking to win his 13th gold ring from the series.

Other notables who made it through the first flight include Ian Steinman, Shane Paheco, and Bryan Piccioli among others. There were also quite popular poker pros who, unfortunately, could not survive all 17 levels. Those include JC Tran, Dustin Fox, Adam Owen, and Vincent Moscati, among others. Despite their Day 1A failure, they will be able to enter the tournament once again today when the second starting flight is set to be played.

Defending champ Max Young was nowhere to be seen on Day 1A of the $1,700 Main Event. However, the player had a good excuse for his absence as he was fighting for his fourth gold ring in the $400 No-Limit Hold’em (1-Day) event. The player outlasted 143 entries to capture the coveted piece.

This time last year, Young took down the Main Event at Harveys Lake Tahoe, yet again for a gold ring and $147,699 in prize money. The player was the last man standing from a field of 458 contenders and collected the lion’s share of the $687,000 prize pool. Young is expected to enter the tournament through Flight 2 today for a chance to defend his title.

The prize pool of this year’s edition of the Main Event is yet to be determined as registration is still open and will remain open until Level 12 of Day 1B. The tournament’s second flight is set to kick off today at 11 am local time.
